2009 Lamborghini LP 560-4
Wednesday, April 1, 2009
Story by Jason Husman |
|
Lamborghini of Beverly Hills loaned me a 2009 Lamborghini LP 560-4 today for 24 hours. After picking it up, I quickly drove home to pick up JoAnn. We were very lucky to have Bianca babysitting for a few hours! We left Manhattan Beach, drove up to Malibu along the coast and ate at Moonshadows. On the way back, we stopped to take a few pictures.

Having the car for 24 hours really gave me a chance to get to know the car. Overall, the car is amazing. It is one of the fastest cars I have driven. Using the thrust control feature, I could rocket the car from 0 to 60 in about 3 1/2 seconds. It was really easy to do! Bijan took some video while during one launch.
My favorite driving mode was the Corsa (race) mode. This optimizes the gear changes, acceleration and handling for quick driving.

2008 Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera
Wednesday, June 4, 2008
Story by Jason Husman |
|
Today we participated in the Ultimate Lamborghini Experience at Auto Club Speedway (formerly California Speedway) in Fontana, CA. The event was sponsored by Lamborghini of Beverly Hills and Al & Ed's Autosound. The dealership provided three Gallardo's and the car audio guys brought a variety of modified vehicles for show.
Again, we decided to spend the night closer to the race track so we didn't have to get up as early to drive there by 8:00 am. The day started off with a catered breakfast and a mandatory 30 minute racing technical class. Immediately after the training, we were given helmets for the day (and to keep!) and were put into a group.
Basically I was given two opportunities to drive a Gallardo Supperleggera around the 2.8 mile, 21 turn, auto competition road course. I was also able to take my 2007 Vantage and a Smart car around the track for a number of laps. The Lamborghini was definitely the quickest car of the three.
I enjoyed driving the Aston Martin and didn't have any problem following the Lamborghinis around the track. Many of the other owners were not seasoned drivers and were probably shocked that I was keeping up! The Smart car was just a silly car for the track.
Every time I got into a car and went on the track, one of the many celebrity racing instructors rode as passenger and instructor. My instructor for the day was V.J. Merzayan, a seasoned Grand Am driver who also set multiple club track records. It was very helpful to have expert advice around every corner. After each lap I was always improving my times and technique.
The other celebrity drivers included Tony Adamowicz (Tony A2Z), Al Unser III, Kim Brower, Steve Walsh, David Mecey, Darren Young, Jonathan Lawson, Troy Mueller (Rowland) and Flynn Baglin.
One of the highlights of the day was the unveiling of the brand new Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4. There were plenty of reporters present including Motor Trend, Road & Track and Los Angeles KNBC Channel 4 doing a short for their television show Whipnotic.

2008 Aston Martin DBS
Tuesday, June 3, 2008
Story by Jason Husman |
|
Aston Martin of Beverly Hills invited me to test drive the new Aston Martin DBS at the recently re-opened Malibu Beach Inn at Carbon Beach, Malibu on Tuesday. We arrived around noon to a parking lot full of Aston Martins. We were then treated to a catered lunch in one of the meeting rooms that had a large deck overlooking the ocean. We met with some of the Aston Martin corporate reps and my Aston Martin sales rep, Janelle Salehi.
After waiting for my turn, I jumped into the DBS passenger seat and headed south on the PCH (Highway 1) with one of the reps. Eventually we turned off the road and headed up one of the Santa Monica mountains. The thing I noticed right away was the amazing sound that came from a combination of the V12 and the dual exhaust.
Soon after heading up the hill, I took control of the car. Having driven these hills quite often in the Vantage, I decided to push the DBS to the limits. I quickly noticed the extra HP and the loose traction control. It was actually more difficult to handle in the corners but also more adventurous.
In my opinion everything on the DBS was just a bit better than the V8 Vantage. I was expecting a lot more from the DBS since it costs more than double the price of the Vantage. Personally, I wouldn't be able to justify the $330K+ asking price for the DBS. I would pick the 2009 Vantage with the new 4.7L V8 and other upgrades.

2008 Aston Martin V8 Vantage

Tim and Jason drive from Southern to Northern California in the V8 Vantage.
Two of our favorite sections of road were Stewarts Point-Skaggs Springs Road around Lake Sonoma (until the road turned rough) and Shoreline Hwy (Highway 1) from Hardy to Leggett. There are many scenic sections along Highway 1. My advice would be to drive during the week in the off-season.

2008 Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera
Monday, April 28, 2008
Story by Jason Husman |
|
Lamborghini of Beverly Hills offered me the Superleggera on Monday. Of course I didn't turn them down. We ended up driving around Los Angeles for nearly two hours. JoAnn and I picked up the car and went west to Malibu along the PCH. We managed to get up one curvy mountain road and come back down another. At one point, we went through a tunnel, where I nearly caused some hearing damage by mashing the accelerator. The car is extremely loud even when stock.
JoAnn took her turn driving the Lamborghini! Although she wanted a pillow to help boost her height, she was more than capable of handling the car. She managed to floor the accelerator a few times and laughed as if on a rollercoaster!
Here are some Gallardo LP560/4 pricing specs so far. Base price is $198,000. Available options include E-gear ($10,000), dark rear tail lights ($325), transparent engine bonnet ($4,235), colored brake calipers ($850), carbon ceramic brakes ($15,600), electric & heated seats ($3,630), heated seats ($600), bluetooth ($900), premium audio system ($2,080), navigation system ($2,600), rear view camera ($2,600), complete luggage set ($7,800) and leather steering wheel ($650). Freight options are sea ($2,000) or air ($6,502).

2008 Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera
Sunday, April 27, 2008
Story by Jason Husman |
|
Today was the semi-annual Lamborghini owner's run in Los Angeles. The day started at the LA Lamborghini service center location. A quick breakfast, oil check and a little drama. One owner misjudged a curb and high centered his Countach. That was quickly remedied with about five guys lifting the front of the car while the owner reversed his car.
Our route was fairly straight forward. First we jumped onto the 405 north, then met up with the 5 north and eventually turned west on the 126. A few miles down the 126 we took a gas and bathroom break. Just before the stop, we caught the attention of the CHP. While taking our midway break, we saw a few CHP roll through the gas station. Luckily, we never saw them again. There was only one all woman car in the mix and I just had to take their picture!
After the break we headed west to Fillmore and then south on the 23. Eventually we ended up in the hills above Malibu on Decker Canyon Road. Once we reached PCH, we went south and ran into the 10 east. The last stop was the dealership for a decent Italian brunch. JoAnn met me, we had some grub and we took another 20 minute test drive in the Superleggera. She also approved the Gallardo! So...
I ordered a 2010 Gallardo LP560/4! Woo Hoo!
Here are some performance stats on the Gallardo. The standard Gallardo has 520hp, weighs 1430kg (dry), has a top speed of 196 mp/h and hits 100 km/h (62 mp/h) in 3.95 seconds. The Gallardo Superleggera has 530hp, weighs 1330kg, has a top speed of 196 mp/h and and hits 100 km/h in 3.8 seconds. The new Gallardo 560/4 has 560hp, weighs 1500kg, has a top speed of 202 mp/h and and hits 100 km/h in 3.7 seconds!

2007 Los Angeles Auto Show
Saturday, November 17, 2007
Story by Jason Husman |
|
The Los Angeles Auto Show was November 16th through the 25th this year at the Los Angeles Convention Center. The show used to be in the middle of January which conflicted with the Detroit Auto Show. The LA Auto Show is pretty much the same format year after year. There are basically four massive halls including the South Hall, West Hall, Kentia Hall and Concourse Hall.
The Concourse Hall is where you will find Aston Martin, Bentley, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Lotus, Morgan, Mosler, Rolls-Royce, Spkyer and Vector. This is definitely the most interesting hall to visit. Porsche has it's own massive, designated area in the Petree Hall. Maserati and Maybach are mixed in with the other major manufacturers.
Some of the more interesting cars at the show include the Aston Martin DBS, Lotus Elise California, BMW M3 Sedan, Ferrari 430 Scuderia, Nissan GT-R, Lamborghini Reventon, Porsche 911 GT2, Subaru WRX STi and the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution. There are also plenty of concepts and hybrids by many manufacturers. Other interesting cars included the Honda S2000 CR, Audi R8, Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG, Mini Cooper Clubman and Spyker C8 Laviolette LWB.
As an Aston Martin owner, I was invited into the Aston Martin area to enjoy the new DBS and the V-8 Vantage N400. The DBS is well known from the last James Bond movie Casino Royale. The Vantage N400 is the special edition Vantage inspired from the company's recent achievements at Le Mans and the Nurburgring 24-hour races. The N400 is also named after the 400 horsepower output, which is up 20 horsepower over the standard V-8 Vantage. The price for the new DBS is around $265,000 and there is a two year waiting list.
In the aftermarket area, Kentia hall, you will find everything from 30" wheels to insurance companies and local law enforcement. This is where I also found Noble, T-Rex, DUB, old Porsche and movie cars.

2007 Richard Petty Driving Experience
Friday, September 21, 2007
Story by Jason Husman |
|
For my 35th birthday, JoAnn bought me the King's Experience with the Richard Petty driving experience. This basically consists of 18 laps around California Speedway in a stock car. The entire time is spent following closely behind an instructor who sets the pace and the driving line.
Thursday night we packed up and headed out towards California Speedway in Fontana, California to spend the night closer the to racetrack. That way we wouldn't have to brave the Los Angeles rush hour traffic early Friday morning. We got to the inside track around 7:30 am. I immediately signed all necessary forms, changed into my suit and prepared for a short introduction speech by the instructors.
Once the class instruction was over, we headed out in large passenger vans around the track. The instructors showed us the lines, the brake zones, cones, flag stand and exit & entry points on the track. After taking photos with a car, we then had some quick instruction standing next to the car. Following that, we had another drivers meeting!
ARTICLE PHOTOS
Click on the thumbnail to see a larger size photo.
After all of the instruction, I finally drove eight laps following roughly 3-5 car lengths behind my instructor. The car was extremely loud, always wanted to turn left and vibrated like nothing else. The windshield had a nasty glare, the restraints and the Hans device didn't allow me to move in my seat or look around much at all.
After everyone took their first eight laps, we had another drivers meeting and got to take our final ten laps. During the last ten laps, I turned a 50 second lap hitting an average speed of about 146 MPH. Keep in mind that the instructor dictates the speed and NASCAR doesn't allow them to go more than a certain speed. Once everyone finished those laps, we had a quick ceremony and was able to purchase photos.
The whole experience was really quite fun! I look forward to trying the Mario Andretti Racing School at the California Speedway. They also offer Drivetech Racing School, Fastrack Riders, Skip Barber Racing School, CalSpeed Karting and The Racing Experience at this track.
Videos below include the first drive away, a lap section, one lap and driving up.

2007 Palos Verdes International Concours
Sunday, September 16, 2007
Story by Jason Husman |
|
On the day before my birthday, we got up early and drove over to the Trump National Golf Club in Los Angeles to check out the 15th annual Palos Verdes International Concours d'Elegance. We had purchased our tickets early at the pre-sale cost of $25 per person. The preferred parking was an additional $20 at the event.
Besides the cars that were showing and competing for awards, there was a Shelby corral, a few new cars, wine tasting, a few vendors, a liquor stand and a food stand barbequing hamburgers and hot dogs. Because JoAnn wasn't all that interested in the cars, we headed for the liquor stand first! A beer and a bloody Mary was a great substitute for breakfast in the morning. For lunch we ended up eating a cheeseburger and a chicken sandwich with another pair of drinks.
Most of the show cars were built before we were born and most of them were exceptionally boring to look at. I guess I'm just a modern car lover so it's hard to appreciate the vintage cars. Although, in front of the clubhouse there was an Audi R8 and a Porsche Turbo cabriolet. On the main grounds there was plenty to see from Jaguar, Mercedes Benz, Corvette, Cobra and various other hot rods. In limited numbers was Ferrari, Aston Martin, Bentley, Rolls Royce and a few extremely rare cars.
The show highlights would include an original Ford GT40, a rare Bugatti and a rare Aston Martin. One of the Aston Martin club members tried to recruit me saying that they needed some young blood in the group.

2007 Long Beach Grand Prix
Sunday, April 15, 2007
Story by Jason Husman |
|
The 33rd annual Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach was April 13th, 14th and 15th this year. Everything from champ cars to celebrity racing and drifting to American Le Mans was present at the street course in Long Beach.
Our seats were on a corner that also looked directly at one of the many big screens. To get the best experience, we walked around to nearly every spot and viewing point on the course. Walking around the track was quite a challenge with limited crossovers and lots of people! Once we ate outside in front of Bubba Gump and the noise was absolutely ridiculous!
There were many other attractions to see including the Sony robot, indoor pits, go karts, modified cars and bikini contests. Hugh Hefner presided as Grand Marshall of the celebrity race along with girlfriends Holly Madison and Bridget Marquardt. Girlfriend Kendra Wilkinson was already in her race car along with other celebrities including George Lucas, Dave Mirra, Martina Navratilova and Robin Quivers. Dave Mirra won the celebrity race.

2007 Aston Martin V8 Vantage
Wednesday, November 22, 2006
Story by Jason Husman |
|
The Aston Martin has arrived!
After 10 months of waiting, I finally picked up the new car the day before Thanksgiving break. Total price with car, options, taxes and registration came to just under $135K. I just love the way the car looks, sounds and drives. I'm glad I didn't buy anything else including a Porsche!
While we were waiting to finalize some paperwork, we looked around at some of the other amazing cars at the dealership. Also pictured below is the Bugatti Veyron (sticker at ~1.7M) and the new convertible Bently Continental GTC (sticker at ~300K). Both of these cars had a significant dealer markup!

2002 Donzi 38 Daytona
Sunday, September 24, 2006
Story by Jason Husman |
|
My buddy Bijan took us out on his speed boat this weekend. He paid something like $250,000 for this 38 foot long beast previously owned by Don Johnson. I was kind of shocked when he pulled up at the dock. This thing was HUGE!
I think he said the boat holds 240 gallons of gas, weighs over 11,500 pounds and gets less than 1 mile per gallon. Well, we hit close to 80 MPH a number of times and what a rush that was. We had to wear some serious ear protection while sitting in the back.
ARTICLE PHOTOS
Click on the thumbnail to see a larger size photo.
I tried to get some great still photos inside and outside of the boat. The pirate ship from the movie Pirates of the Caribbean, the Black Pearl, was docked near where we launched. We also cruised by some serious transport ships. The videos pick up on the wind noise, but hopefully you can see what it is like to travel nearly 80 MPH on the ocean! The last video is just of the engine bay while at idle.

2006 Aston Martin V8 Vantage

Story by Jason Husman |

I finally had an opportunity to take an Aston Martin V8 Vantage for a test spin on Saturday. We picked up a brand new Vantage at the Beverly Hills dealership and drove up to Malibu. We stopped and had some lunch at Dukes just off the Pacific Coast Highway.
ARTICLE PHOTOS
Click on the thumbnail to see a larger size photo.
After lunch I was able to take the car for a spin through some of the Malibu hills. I was quite impressed with the handling and ease of driving around the winding corners. The car makes quite a loud exhaust note when driven hard. Overall, it was an enjoyable experience and I can't wait until mine arrives in late October or early November.
We didn't take many pictures, but we did attempt a few short videos. I was trying to capture the exhaust note and V8 sound.

The NSX is GONE! I shipped the NSX to it's new home to Colorado today. After weeks of hassling with transport options, we finally got Intercity Lines to pick it up. Tim had to wait weeks just to ship the car. It only took about four days for the NSX to arrive in Boulder. I hope the car likes cold weather!
Here are the photos from the NSX leaving Los Angeles and it's first day in Boulder. The only other car in the truck was a Porsche GT.

2002 Willow Springs Raceway
Sunday, August 25, 2002
Story by Jason Husman |
|
Soon after I moved to California, I had to go check out a race track. The most interesting track, that was sort of close, was Willow Springs. A few hours outside of Los Angeles and I had arrived.
To my surprise, the Pulp Racing crew was there! You might have heard of them because of their popular website, the NSX-files. This day they brought their trailer with a slightly modified Honda S2000 and a Ferrari 360.
The track was full of Dodge Vipers, Porsches, BMWs and various small cars. I was lucky enough to take my S2000 around the track a couple of times. Unfortunately, it wasn't true track time. There was a break in the action around lunchtime and visitors were allowed to circle the track playing follow the leader. Most of the time I was following Wayne's girlfriend driving the 360!
I took pictures of a few of the cars, the Pulp Racing crew and the track (in the background).
